The US-Space: Underrepresented Student and Social Justice Initiative Space

The US-Space: Underrepresented Student and Social Justice Initiative Space

Mission Statement: The Underrepresented-Student Space, or “US-Space,” is a tangible manifestation of the Law School’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. The US-Space further enriches the student body by promoting a sense of campus community and inclusiveness for underrepresented students. Additionally, because Gonzaga is committed to the intellectual development of all students, it is imperative that such a space be set aside that specializes in services and resources for students who have been historically underrepresented at the Law School. The space also promotes Gonzaga’s mission by creating a space where students can get involved in social justice conversations, education, and opportunities.

The US-Space will accomplish its mission by providing at least the following:

  • A safe physical location where students can gather to discuss issues that affect them disproportionately, including discussions on racism, inequality in the justice system, and other similar social justice issues.
  • A centralized location where affinity clubs can meet in solidarity and further engage in uncomfortable/provocative discourse
  • Resources that are targeted for underrepresented students.
  • A bridge to existing resources
  • Resources that help mitigate the stress that accompanies many students who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color and who attend a predominantly white institution.
  • Opportunities to engage in the larger Spokane community

Room Usage: The prioritized use of the US-Space will be provided to any Gonzaga Law School multicultural student, affinity group, or the SBA Diversity Chair or Social Justice Chair in furtherance of their elected positions.

The use of the US-Space’s cabinet as storage is subject to the storage policy outlined in the Term Sheet. Students acknowledge the SBA is not liable for any misplaced items and that priority use of the cabinets remains with SBA members for organizational materials.
